bio I artist statement
Amy Rockett-Todd is a native of the foothills of North Carolina. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she embarked on a creative journey seeking her place in her art, when it seemed to search out to her instead. After moving to the mid-west she began attending life drawing sessions where her lines and shapes began to evolve almost without her consent. Her marks became very aggressive and active as they worked themsleves into her compositions, depicting more abstracted forms and contours of the human body. The vigorous physical motions of her marks are evident in her work. She works in charcoal, conte crayon and pastels, as well as in oils. Amy is in awe of the fauvists' use of bold color, noting such artists as Derain and Matisse for example. She is also influenced by the early works of Duchamp as well as de Kooning's paintings of women.
She currently resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
